Preserving Summer's Bounty

More summertime bounty has been jarred up this past week.
Chow chow relish is a popular choice for preserving when you have
ample goodies from the garden that you don't want to go to waste.
This Chow Chow Relish has our homegrown Organic cucumbers
& green tomatoes, Saanich BC onions, BC red bell peppers &
cauliflower instead of cabbage. There are plenty of interpretations
of a chow chow, many including all of these ingredients plus more,
such as carrots, chopped green beans & any other veggies from the
garden that you'd like in the mix. Chow Chow is slightly more
coarsely chopped than a regular relish condiment, and ours is
made with the addition of apple cider vinegar. Very tasty!
Use this delicious multipurpose relish on burgers, sandwiches,
hotdogs, fish/crab cakes, pulled pork BBQ & chicken salad.
In the South, it's traditionally served with pinto beans & cornbread.
 Spicy Summer Tomato Salsa
Our fresh garden tomatoes mixed with roasted sweet BC grown
bell peppers, cilantro, lime juice & three hot peppers for some kick!
Salsa is such a terrific staple to have on hand. It's good on just
about anything we have in regular meal rotation in our house.
Here are some suggestions:
Serve with tortilla chips for a super quick snack, top grilled white fish,
serve with re-fried beans,  fajitas, quesadillas, roasted potatoes,
tacos, omelets, toasted baguettes & spicy black bean burgers.
Have I been stuffing some pickles??
102 jars filled on Monday. That was a full days work!
Obviously these need time to cure in the jars so these are all
being set aside for the Moss St. Market Holiday Fair in Dec.
Dec. 8th and 9th/Sat/Sun 10-4pm for both days
September 8 to 15 the BC Association of Farmers Markets
proudly celebrates the 3rd annual Farmers Appreciation Week.
Please show support for BC agriculture by shopping
at your local farmer's market. Hope to see you this weekend at
our beautiful & bountiful Moss St. Market!
 Happy Friday! See you soon...

Love Grows Here

The garden is beautiful & bountiful.
I've been picking & packing pickles every few days now.
Today, another 23 jars were filled. The cucumbers couldn't
wait another two days. Saturday I'm at the market.
Hopefully by Sunday there will be another big bowls worth.
L to R: Elk Lake Farms Organic garlic, Salish Sea Salts &
our homegrown Organic pickling cucumbers.
On Monday, I went to Nanaimo to pick crabapples.
100lbs later, I was back in the kitchen, boiling, straining
& mashing them through the food mill.
Available at the market starting this Saturday is our
seasonal crabapple jelly & crabapple fruit butter.
Crabapple jelly juice.

We also have back in stock for the first time this season:
The Hot Chili-lime Pickled Beans.
My dilly beans are hot, but these ones are HOTTER!
Perfect for Caesar cocktails or just munching on 'em
right out of the jar for a spicy snack.

I'm like a broken record here, always telling you that I'm short
on time for this blogging stuff. The truck is packed full & we'll be
heading to the market in a few short hours. Hope to see you there!
